So, the Needy Girl Overdose anime
2026-04-04
Thank you to everyone who has sent in comments previously. Between my last post in February and now, I think I have tried writing at least 8 different blog posts, and then failed to complete any of them.
I had a bit of a depressive episode in February, and that completely tanked my ability to write or finish anything, and I've kind of been in a weird limbo ever since. After watching the NGO anime I did finally find the energy to write because I wanted to share my thoughts, so here's a quick speedrun of what I've been doing:
- I made it 60+ days in Anki! Yayyy. It's fun being able to read simple sentences in comments and stuff
- I got a TrimUI Brick! It's my first handheld emulation device, I was going to make a post on it but never finished it. I've been playing mostly GBA games on it
- I played a few Pokemon rom hacks - decomp hacks are very cool in particular, I played through Modern Emerald and Heart & Soul
- I watched a few animes like Ishuzoku Reviewers, It's MyGo, Ave Mujica
- I also finally ended up picking up a DSi XL, I meant to months ago and then prices blew up out of nowhere. I got a pink one at like 60% going price "as-is" from an auction, it needed some serious cleaning (was covered in glitter, had old soda lining every crevice, and I even found a bug in it), but other than that it works fine lol
- Broke my PS2 disc drive in the process of trying to change the CMOS battery bc I accidentally ripped the ribbon cable... why did they make it so in-depth to get to the battery on that damned thing... -_-
I have a few things here that I actually wanted to talk about more in-depth, but who knows if I'll ever get to it. I guess we'll see.
Onto the anime...
The Needy Girl Overdose anime
(Will contain spoilers for the game. CW: sexual assault mentioned)

So, I was extremely skeptical when I originally saw the announcement for the anime, and I did not have high hopes for it. Animes based on games are never good, and usually fan-service adaptation at most. I also didn't know what they could do for an anime, because the game is completely self-contained and is pretty much solely about Ame doing drugs and masturbating in her room while on a quest to become something she hates in order to pay her rent. There's really not much content for them to adapt.
Thankfully, it seems like they're going for a completely original story here -- possibly a sequel to the game? I was actually really surprised with what they did here, because I was hoping they would leave into surreal/denpa aspects, but I didn't actually think they'd commit to it. Sorry for doubting you, Nyalra.

There are also a few new characters here -- a rival streamer group who seeks to surpass Kangel, Karamazov, and then a woman who is just a fan of Kangel, Kache (who has split black/white hair that I absolutely adore).
I get the feeling Kache is going to be the real main character here -- she spends the majority of the episode being sexually harassed by random men and her boyfriend, so I assume Kangel is her escapism from the awful world she lives in. My prediction is that she's going to fall into further obsession with Kangel, who seems to voice her inner struggles and almost talks back to her in streams, providing her respite and hope in these godawful moments, and I assume said obsession is either going to lead to her suicide or some other extremely dramatic conclusion like some of the VN endings had.
I have seen comments saying the writing is a bit too on-the-nose and pretentious, but I don't mind. It is kinda crazy that they did overlay Kache being raped with Kangel talking about how it's better to assert yourself, and that she'll be there to watch over her darling viewers, but I like what they're going for and I appreciate that they're not shying away from vulgarity.

Anyway, I'm also glad that they did also acknowledge a few things that I feel people overlook with NGO -- I talked a bit about it on my dedicated page, but I feel that the "omg she's just like me fr" crowd tends to ignore the fact that Ame is repulsed by Kangel. She hates being Kangel and she is actively suffering doing this, but is addicted to the attention and success so she keeps at it -- after all, without Kangel she is nobody.
I also liked that when they showed "P-chan," Ame's hands just phase through them. I know that she's known for the whole "omg I'm soooo obsessed with my boyfriend >w<" thing, but I think it's also important to note that said boyfriend she's obsessed with isn't real which is a whole other thing in itself. P-chan is her beloved tulpa...

Regardless, we've only seen episode 1 so far. From what I understand there were initial showings of the first 3 episodes in Japanese theatres, but of course I'm gonna have to wait for now... L. I'm happy with what they're doing so far though, and it did exceed my expectations -- I'm glad they decided to go with an original story. I think the first episode will filter out a lot of people (either due to the content or the abstract presentation of most scenes), but I think it's worth a shot if you liked the game and are interested in what appears to be a follow-up to it.
