New year, new blog?
2026-01-18
Every now and then I make some sort of attempt at a blog and I never know why. For what reason? For whom? Regardless, here we are yet again.
I've tried using sites like Dreamwidth for writing, but at the end there is nothing truly like writing into the void of my website. I don't know if I will ever update this blog past this initial update, but I suppose we'll see.
At the end of 2025, I ended up switching my server from my VPS back to a regular web host, as my site was previously hosted on my Akkoma VPS that cost me 20$/month (currency conversion, man), and I didn't want to pay that anymore. As of writing, fear.garden is currently hosted on Nekoweb.
I do not really see myself returning to Neocities despite my views and followers there (though I do miss the attention lol), as their tools are simply inadequate. Nekoweb's git feature is exactly what I wanted from Neocities (it's literally just pushing your local repo to Nekoweb with regular ol' git), instead of some weird git-like bullshit that Neocities had in their dedicated CLI tool.
Anyway, the year is now 2026. As of February I will be going on 9 years of having a public-facing website -- the original creation date of my Neocities was apparently Feb 9, 2017. It's been an interesting 9 years for sure, and I still fondly recall skipping classes in high school to sit in the hall on my laptop, working away at seeing what I could manage to do with the meager HTML skills I had learned from Neopets and Tumblr over the years.
This website has gone through many iterations, domain changes, and revamps throughout the years -- to be honest, I don't even know if this is the same website I started off with. It's like a ship of Theseus sort of dilemma, I think. Hell, I've gone through many iterations and revamps at this point -- I am definitely not the same person I was in 2017 when I started.
Despite everything though, I'm still here. It makes me laugh when people think their website has to be something they commit to 24/7, with the sole other option being just quitting -- it doesn't have to be like that. I will go months or even more than a year without updating sometimes, but here I am, still around, coming back around whenever I finally have inspiration.
So, here's to another year on this godforsaken planet. I have started dabbling in some odd things for sure at this point in my life, but I think anything goes once all your time starts being dedicated to your shitty office job and there's nothing else worth it anymore.
Til next time -- if there is a next time, anyway.
